Understanding the KP Index
Geomagnetic activity scale
Kp 0-1: Quiet
Aurora visible only at high latitudes (>65°N)
Kp 2-3: Unsettled
Aurora visible at 60-65°N latitudes
Kp 4: Active
Aurora visible at 55-60°N, possible at 50°N
Kp 5: Minor Storm (G1)
Aurora visible at 50-55°N
Kp 6: Moderate Storm (G2)
Aurora visible at 45-50°N
Kp 7: Strong Storm (G3)
Aurora visible at 40-45°N
Kp 8: Severe Storm (G4)
Aurora visible at 35-40°N
Kp 9: Extreme Storm (G5)
Aurora visible at <35°N - rare event!
Pro Tips for Aurora Viewing
- • Find a location away from city lights with clear view to the north
- • Aurora is typically strongest around magnetic midnight (varies by location)
- • Even with high Kp, clouds can block the view - check local weather
- • Camera settings: ISO 1600-3200, f/2.8, 10-20 sec exposure
- • Download the AstroDeck app for real-time notifications!
